Description

The Nebulus Lifestyle Ski Jacket combines elegance, durability and excellent design. It’s fully breathable and boasts a 3,000 mm water column, making it both windproof and water repellent.

It has a convenient ski pass pocket on the left sleeve and two exterior zipped pockets. Snow guards both on the interior of the jacket and the sleeves and Velcro fasteners prevent the snow from entering your clothes and keep your body’s temperature at normal levels.

The detachable hood is equipped with a drawstring which ensures easy adjustment.

This warm softshell ski jacket is 100% polyester, suitable for both the slopes and the après-ski joints. Softshell jackets are a modern alternative to fleece and are hard wearing, durable and windproof.

Polyester fabrics provide specific advantages over natural ones such as being extremely strong, durable, quick drying and easily washed making this an ideal jacket.

Some Wonder…

Some have wondered whether the XL size fits properly. There is no reason to fear. This is a fitted jacket which is not at all baggy and comfortably fits an XL chest size.

Furthermore, its breathability depends entirely on the fabric – there are no under arm vents.

Pros
  • Warm and breathable, even in very cold conditions.
  • Extremely comfortable to wear and good value for money.
Cons

Some customers complained that the hood was a bit odd to wear. Others claimed that although its quality and design were great, the X-L size is slightly on the small side. A few also said that the XX-L was a bit slim fitting.

If that’s true, it would be better to buy a larger size than you normally would.

  • Full stretch, seam – sealed ARED VO2 10,000 mountain jacket
  • High loft insulation
  • Soft Inner material lining
  • A technical hood
  • Cooling underarm zips
  • Stretch bound cuffs
  • 100% polyester
  • Fastening zip
  • Various chest sizes

Description

The Dare 2B Well Versed Men’s Ski Jacket 2014 is a full stretch, seam-sealed 10,000 mountain jacket designed for full performance and protection on the slopes and yet is fashionable and comfortable enough for après-ski wear as well.

Featuring a high loft insulation and soft to touch lining, it guarantees hours of intense skiing without getting cold.

Its manmade synthetic insulation uses poly fibres, which is the lab’s equivalent of natural down. This type of insulation replicates the warming and heating effects of natural down without the bulk and with higher levels of breathability, all at a lower cost.

It performs better than natural down when wet and provides plenty of circulated heat with more freedom of movement.

High loft insulation combines with soft to touch lining which ensures warmth.  Its highlighted performance features include: a technical hood, cooling underarm zips and stretch bound cuffs to ensure a secure fit.

The hood is fairly big, plus it has an extra added peak that extends a further two inches at its widest brim point from the hood. Depending on the size of your head and hair, if you pull the peak down, it comes to the tip of your nose.

This is ideal if you wear glasses, as they are fully protected by the extended peak thus ensuring perfect vision even if it is raining or snowing.

The Dare 2B Well Versed Men’s Ski Jacket is 100% polyester (including the inner lining), is equipped with a fastening zip and comes in 9 different chest sizes:

  • XXS (34 in/86cm)
  • XS (36in/92cm)
  • S (38in/97cm)
  • M (40in/102cm)
  • L (42in/107cm)
  • XXL (47in/119cm)
  • XXXL (50in/127cm)
  • XXXXL (53in/134cm)
  • XXXXXL (56in/142cm)

Designed to protect on long-leg burners, difficult runs and also for après-ski comfort, this ski jacket is an excellent option for skiers who seek a satisfying yet affordable option.

Pros
  • It will keep you nice and dry against the chilly winds of the slopes, without having to wear much underneath it.
  • It is lightly padded and, hence, comfortably light, without restricting the movement of your torso and hands
  • The internal goggle mesh pocket and the inner stretch bound cuffs with thumb loops are practical.
  • Pumpkin Orange is a great colour – bright and vibrant orange!
  • Its price is exceptionally low – for this quality.
Cons

There were a few complaints from customers about the length of the arm which was too long in some cases.  Others found that the XS size was more like S or M.  Since people vary so much in size or shape, it is advisable to try on the jacket if possible, before purchasing it.

3. Berghaus

Men’s Stormcloud – The Best Ski Jacket

Berhaus ski clothes

View on Amazon.co.uk

  • Additional wet weather protection, the jacket comes with adjustable hood
  • Waterproof
  • Windproof
  • Two convenient zipped pockets for your essentials
  • Adjustable cuff tabs and a drawstring hem ensure a good fit
  • Made of lightweight AQ2 material

Description

The Berghaus men’s Stormcloud Waterproof Jacket is an excellent choice for performance on any hill adventures.  The AQ2 fabric was developed by Berghaus and offers high-quality breathability, as well as waterproof properties capable of keeping you dry and comfortable while outdoors in the elements.

Its most important characteristic is its high vapour transmission rate and a hydrostatic head of 10,000 mm, ensuring that you can ski even during heavy rain or snowfall.

The AQ2 protection guarantees you safety even in the worst possible conditions: waterproof and lightweight, it ensures excellent breathability, allowing the vapour to escape easily through the fabric and enhancing the overall enjoyment of the outdoors to its fullest. The coloured fabric backer adds an interesting detail.

The hood is adjustable as well as the cuff tabs, and there is a drawstring hem. Berghaus have had 45 years of experience to perfect their outdoor wear, making this an excellent choice of jacket.

Some wonder…

Some of you may wonder if the hood rolls into a pouch or pocket and if it is sealed with Velcro buttons or zip.  The hood does fold into the collar but is not sealed. Others inquired whether the jacket has a stiff peak hood or a soft one. The latter is true.

For some of you the jacket’s fitting, especially if you plan to wear a thin fleece underneath, is important. Customers have observed that, for a stocky build, even the L size will fit well with a thick fleece underneath.

Bear also in mind that this ski jacket is breathable, but it would be best used as an outer shell with a light fleece underneath. Others have asked whether the jacket has a baffle behind the front zip. There is a flap of material behind the zip that provides insulation and protects from wind and rain.

The jacket has no lining but is light, stylish and waterproof. There is a small stuff sack that can be kept in a pocket.

Pros
  • The jacket is fully waterproof, breathable fabric, with an excellent hood which is fully adjustable.
  • The jacket is an unlined shell; it folds up small, is light and easily packable with a small bag to fit it in.
Cons
Some customers have claimed they had trouble when they used the jacket for anything more strenuous than walking or cycling in the rain. They said that in heavy rain it wasn’t completely waterproof. However, others found it waterproof but not breathable enough.

A few buyers complained that there is no loop to hang it up and the zip appeared a bit flimsy.

4. Trespass

Men’s Cokedale Ski Jacket

TresPass Men's Jacket

View on Amazon.co.uk

  • Padded waterproof jacket
  • Underarm ventilation zips
  • Adjustable zip off hood
  • Snowskirt
  • 3 zip pockets, inner pockets and goggle pocket

Description

The men’s Cokedale is a padded and durable ski jacket.  The front zip is water repellent which aids the weather seal of the jacket to keep you warm and dry.

The Coldheat insulation technology ensures that body heat is held inside by soft fibres.

It soaks up body heat as it evaporates meaning that heat loss is minimal. It will keep you comfortable in the coldest conditions while still giving freedom of movement.

The jacket is waterproof up to 5,000 mm, it is windproof, and the taped seams ensure the weather seal.  The slow break and elastic cuffs have Velcro tabs so that no snow or rain can penetrate.  It also keeps the wind out, and the underarm ventilation zips enable you to get rid of excess body heat if needed.  If it gets cold, just close the vent and no more drafts!

The hood is fully adjustable and can be zipped off when not required.  There are three exterior zip pockets for easy access, additional inner pockets and also a special goggle pocket, so there is plenty of storage room where you can keep the necessities dry and convenient for use.

Some Wonder…

Some people asked how well the sizing fits. For a 36 – 38 inch chest the medium size fits perfectly, it is a loose fit, not too tight or constricting.  If you normally take a small size then probably the extra small will fit well. Others enquired what would be the chest sizes for a large and extra large.  The large size fits a 44-inch chest, not too tight or baggy.

Pros
  • This is a good budget ski jacket which is warm and comfy.
  • It has plenty of pockets for storage of essentials.
  • Fits perfectly, warm and waterproof, ideal for snowboarding.
  • Excellent quality and well worth the money.
  • Sizes fit perfectly, not too tight or too loose.
Cons

While customers agreed that this is a good budget ski jacket, some found that the sleeves and insides of the pockets get very wet if you are sweating.  It is a very warm garment, so it is better just to wear a base layer to prevent any chance of overheating.

5. iLoveSIA

Men’s Waterproof Mountain Jacket – Ski Outdoor Coat

iLoveSIA Ski Jacket for men

View on Amazon.co.uk

  • Exterior windproof soft shell
  • Inner microfleece liner
  • Relaxed fit, quick dry fabric
  • Cotton, polyester and fleece
  • Velcro at cuffs, hood and side pockets

Description

This mountain jacket is fully windproof with a soft shell and has inner micro-fleece lining.  The coat is relaxed in fitting, and the fabric is quick-drying and warm. It is made of a mixture of cotton, polyester and fleece with a front zip closure.

Micro-fleece is often compared to soft wool although it is not made from natural fibre it weighs less than wool and is highly breathable and easy to wash and care for.

The jacket has Velcro windproof cuff closures, hood and vertical side pockets that will surely prove handy and convenient for anything you may need while sliding the slopes.

Bear also in mind that this particular iLoveSIA jacket is also suitable for skiing, hiking, climbing, travelling and camping and many other activities. Note that it is manufactured in China.

Some Wonder…

There have been enquiries as to the length of the jacket.  For a six foot tall man, the XXXL should reach to halfway down the hip.  The sizes, however, may be on the small side, so it is better to err on the larger size.

Customers asked if the hood is removable.  It is indeed removable and highly waterproof – during light or moderate raining or snowfall. Still, in the pouring rain, it could get damp on the inside if you are exposed for long periods of time.

Inner zip pockets have also raised questions. Note that there is only one inside pocket on the left which is not zipped.

Pros
  • Excellent quality and it looks great
  • Breathable and waterproof, comfortable to wear
  • Good value for money
  • Inner lining is soft and warm
Cons

Many customers find that the sizes are small, so it is better to order a larger size than you would normally buy especially if you wish to wear a thick jumper underneath.

It can get damp on the inside in very heavy rain if exposed for long periods of time. Bear also in mind that the sleeves are not fleece lined – lining fits only around the body in the front and back.

7. Marmot

Men’s Stride Jacket

  • Driclime bi – component wicking lining keeps you dry when you sweat
  • Zipped front pockets for essentials
  • Wind resistant, water repellent and breathable
  • Zippered chest pocket with headphone port
  • Streamlined fit is ideal for fast-paced aerobic activities

  • Increased visibility to motorists provided by reflective accents in low light conditions
  • Collar with adjustment cord

Description

This is the perfect jacket for lightweight protection and complete comfort.

The Marmot Stride jacket is versatile enough for any type of weather.  It is completely wind resistant, water-repellent and highly breathable.

The fabric is 100% polyester and has a special finish to further shed moisture.  The driclime bi – component lining wicks away sweat for even greater comfort and dryness inside.  The strategically placed mesh vents also lend extra breathability.

The mock neck collar and elastic hem have drawstring adjustments to fit to size.  The full length front zipper allows for controlled ventilation and the elastic cuffs help seal in body heat to keep you warm, yet dry.

Two on-seam hand pockets and an angled chest pocket with headphone port – all with secure zipper closures, provide ample storage space for essentials.

The Stride jacket has 360   of reflectivity for increased visibility to motorists which keeps you completely safe in low-light conditions.

Driclime mesh is a bi-component denier gradient dimensional knit of two different denier yarns.  Using extremely fine deniers this knit is exceptionally light with superior wicking performance.

The larger outer yarns are a special filament yarn which pulls the moisture away from the skin to the mesh where it then spreads to increase evaporation.

The structure of the knit combined with the smaller denier yarns on the backside of the mesh increase the surface area which allows for greater moisture holding capacity.  All this increases the comfort of the garment by enabling the wearer to feel dry over a wider range of temperatures and conditions.

The mesh prevents condensation from gathering on the skin no matter what the level of activity due to its 3 dimensional structure.

The dimensional knit structure also helps by spreading the moisture over a larger surface area maximizing the efficiency of the evaporate process. This technology solves the problem of condensation and internal comfort that even the most breathable of fabrics have problems with during high intensity activities.

The athletic fit is ideal for fast paced activities such as aerobics it is easy to move around in.

Pros
  • Ideal for a wide range of activities.
  • Smooth shell lined interior.
  • Easily packed, lightweight but incredibly warm.
  • Quick drying, warm, light and ideal for traveling.
  • 360 for increased visibility to motorists.
Cons

We have not anything particularly negative – at least for this price.

Choosing your Ski Jacket

A suitable ski jacket is essential for a joyful day on the slopes. Shivering and catching a cold won’t let you enjoy the snow. But finding the right ski jacket in this vast array of possible options is has become a little less than a heroic feat.

Before checking out our list of the 7 best ski jackets of 2019, there are some factors you need to consider.

Water Resistance

First of all, what’s best for an experienced skier may be too much for a beginner. Another important aspect is your budget and, of course, your personal taste.

Moreover, it would be useful to know a few things about the weather conditions of the ski resorts you are planning to go and decide how waterproof and breathable your ski jacket needs to be.

Ski jackets are usually made from waterproof or water resistant fabrics, rated in millimetres: the higher the rating, the more waterproof the fabric.

Fabrics with ratings ranging from 0 – 1,500mm are suitable only for outdoor skiing without rain or snow. 1,500mm – 5,000mm rated fabrics are considered waterproof, but only for light to average rain or snowfall. Higher ratings allow skiing and snowboarding even during heavy rain or snowfall.

Breathability

Breathability is a less important factor, but it would be a mistake to overlook it. A breathable ski jacket allows perspiration to escape, keeping warm and dry – otherwise, you will have to stop skiing a lot sooner than you planned.

Breathability is achieved either by the use of certain fabrics, or by mesh linings and ventilation zips, usually under the arms.

Understanding the Jacket’s features

The Snowskirt prevents snow from entering the hem of the jacket when you fall. Pockets and zips are practical for stashing your phone, goggles, money, pass, sun screen etc.

The hood is a very important feature, designed to keep out snow and wind when the weather turns rough. The jacket’s lining is even more significant, keeping your body from cold and alleviating the pain during falls. Adjustable cuffs make sure your jacket will fit nicely around your body, while internal cuffs are designed keep the snow out.

Some last minute hints…

Never forget that, as fun and exciting as skiing is, challenging the slopes without the suitable ski jacket can lead to a wet, cold and most uncomfortable day in the powder.

Aside from the skis themselves, a good jacket will be your best companion on the mountains. It will ensure that you remain dry and maintain a comfortable body temperature throughout the day.

What you need to remember is that your ski jacket should properly match the type of skiing you prefer. For example, if you plan on going to a resort for alpine skiing and use a lift service, take into account that the chair ride up is often long, cold, and windy trip – hence you will need a ski jacket that is properly insulated.

Cross – Country Skiing, on the other hand, is much more intense, and will raise your body temperature. In this case, a soft shell jacket made of a combination of stretchy nylon and polyester is much more preferable.

If Backcountry Skiing is your thing, then you surely know already everything about ski jackets. Bu, in  case you are planning to try it for the first time, bear in mind that most professional skiers opt for uninsulated waterproof, breathable shelled jackets, providing maximum and keeping you warm.

So, check our list, see what suits you best and you are ready to hit the slopes without fear.
