Due to the weather conditions this summer, the Tignes‘ Grand Motte glacier has been closed to skiers and snowboarders, with immediate effect.
The closure has never been so early in the season, however the glacier has seen a high rate of melting this summer and with poor conditions for skiers, the decision has been made to close.
Between the heat and the episodes of heat wave, we have no more snow to work. Cracks are formed and it has become dangerous<span class="su-quote-cite">Grande Motte Cable Car Company</span>
Last Tuesday the summer temperature record was broken with 19.8 degrees at 3,200 meters.

Some of the lifts will continue to run for hikers, climbers and mountain bikers.
Skiing will re-open in the autumn with a planned date of September 28th.
Last year the target opening of the 29th September was postponed due to a lack of snowfall, so it remains to be seen how conditions will be by then.
The other French glacier resort open for summer skiing at the moment is Les Deux Alpes.
