The Resort

Powder Mountain Ski Resort is located in the mountains near Eden, Utah. Powder Ridge Resort is the one ski-in-ski-out resort located on the side of the mountain. Most other lodging is located in nearby communities, but there are shuttle busses ready to take skiers to and from the slopes throughout the day.

Salt Lake City is less than an hour’s drive away, and has most of what you’d expect from a major city, but definitely in the American style.

Getting to the mountain from the UK is easy, if time-consuming; Powder Mountain is only about 55 miles from Salt Lake City. When it comes to distances in North America, this is almost like it has its own international airport.

On the slopes

The skiing is good, with the mountain benefitting from moisture-laden air off of the Great Salt Lake, just over the ridge from the resort site.

There is a reasonable choice of beginner runs, a wide selection of runs for intermediate skiers, but the adrenaline-seeking experts may find the area a bit wanting.

Off Piste

You should expect to do some travelling when it comes to clubs and restaurants in the area – there are few exceptions. Though close by local standards, it’s not the same as hopping down to the local pub or even hitting the mountainside club for a night of revelry.

If the day is warm and the season late though, try the ice bar behind Timberland Lodge. Yes, the bar is really made of ice, and skiers lounge around on picnic tables in the sun to start off the evening’s fun in outdoorsy style. In poorer weather, they often move the fun indoors to the plain, but well-attended main rooms. This isn’t a sophisticated, overly stylish, or electronica hub – just friendly people, plenty of beer, and a rustic party atmosphere.

There aren’t any restaurants open for evening meals at the mountain itself, or even at the base area, but a quick trip to Eden or Ogden and you’ll have a lot of good options.

Links Bistro is good for Mexican and American dishes, and the Saddlebag Saloon is a restaurant-bar with all the woodsy ambiance you should expect from a place like Utah. For something really hearty, check out the Ogden Valley Smokehouse, under 7 miles from the mountain. Finally, Pizza and Pints is a great opportunity to enjoy ‘endless’ pizza, wings and salads while listening to live music the best local artists. Call ahead to book a spot, as it fills up quickly.
